Sreemangal. Day 2

Second day in Sreemangal started with a hike through the tropical forest at one of the national parks.

IMG_5419 IMG_5422 IMG_5431There was a heavy rain early in the morning and our route looked like this

IMG_5424It was beautiful and very hot. But very beautiful. Only one thing was bothering us a lot. A LOT. Many leeches. Many-many leaches crawling up the shoes into the shoes, getting into the ankles, feet and legs. In the middle of the walk I really freaked out when I realised that my socks were soaked not in my sweat, but my blood from the leeches that I was pulling out of my shoes.

brrrBecause it was a weekend, there were plenty of school groups in the park. We were popular, but the nice thing about it is that you can also stare back at them and take photos.

IMG_5440 IMG_5447 IMG_5450 IMG_5452After the hike and the leech stress we had a snack — a half of a pineapple and a half of apapaya . This is a 40 taka snack, or 40 euro cents.

IMG_5455The next destination was a pottery village. Here is a village lady cleaning the rice from the dust

riceThis is the rice before the shell has been peeled

IMG_5463Many cows and excited small kids

IMG_5465 IMG_5468 IMG_5487 IMG_5491They love looking at the pictures that were taken

IMG_5469Then each of us took a pottery class from a very patient and nice man

IMG_5481 IMG_5479And got a piggy bank as a souvenir

IMG_5492People are beautiful and very nice. This lady gave me a little piece of a mango bar with some spices — very typical snack.

And remember I was complaining that nobody was smiling back in Old Dhaka? I am taking my words back.

IMG_5488Our guide was a member of an association that is supported by some American NGO. He is promoting eco tourism in Dhaka and half of the money they are earning is being spent on the street kids. That day one of the boys had a “birthday”. In Bangladesh there are no compulsory birth certificates at the birth, some people often get it only when they take their high school exams. For that reason many people, especially ladies, have the birth year in their birth certificates that is a few years later than their real year of birth. With the street kids it is even more complicated. For this reason they just appoint a date for every kid. This boy was turning 14-15 years old, nobody new it more precise. But to me he looked much younger. When we met him the next day on the streets of Sreemangal, he was riding a rickshaw. Our guide told me that he was a drug addict, but they helped him and also got him a rickshaw, so he is working now and visiting their free school for the street kids.

IMG_5493There was a candle and a cake. I told him not to forget to make a wish and through our guide he said that his wish was to become a carpenter.

IMG_5494There were many people at this celebration.

It was overwhelming.

Sreemangal. Day 1

On the 3rd of May there was a public holiday in Bangladesh and I decided to go to Sreemangal for a long weekend. Sreemangal is here

Screen Shot 2015-05-04 at 20.53.25And it is famous for its tea.

You see how optimistic google is saying that it only takes 3,5 hours to drive there from Dhaka? Well, we rented a mini bus and it took as about 6 hours. Right. 180 km in almost 6 hours.

Our adventure started with a visit to the tea gardens. See the mountains far away? It is India.

IMG_5381 IMG_5372Usually women collect tea leaves — there should be two leaves and a bud — because they are more gentle. Men also help, usually with what needs to be done with the ground and other hard work. This is one of the guys

IMG_5391He showed us this lovely shy plant. Look what it does when you touch it

The lotus lake was absolutely stunning

IMG_5380 IMG_5396 lotus IMG_5395

We met the sunset there as well

IMG_5385Looking for some fruit we visited the market after.

IMG_5401You can buy fresh fish

IMG_5400Or dry fish

IMG_5403Or more dried fishIMG_5404Maybe some more?

dried fishAnother awesome view

IMG_5408This is what tobacco actually looks like (big dried leaves).

IMG_5409Of course bananas and something like plantains

IMG_5410 IMG_5411And chickens right beside it

chicken on the marketWe finished the day with a visit to a local cinema to watch 10 minutes of this Bangladeshi movie. It was hilarious.

IMG_5417Two more days to come!

North Korean restaurant

There is a North Korean restaurant in Dhaka called Pyongyang. Yes, North Korean!

The food was pretty average. Amongst many dishes one could choose Instant Noodle or Beef Leg Salad.nk restoWe had some traditional (as we were told) North Korean beef, that you need to put in a piece of lettuce, add 3 different things (one of which was a whole piece of garlic) and eat!

IMG_5307Another dish worth mentioning was a Top Shell Casserole. It was prepared by one of the waitresses and here is a little video of the dish and a short chat with her

After we had our dinner the entertainment part started and this is what everybody is coming here for. First it was some singing

Then it was some dancing

And of course karaoke! You could choose from the thousands of songs

nk karaokeAs you can imagine it was absolutely hilarious and we had some great fun!

In the end you could also buy some souvenirs

Come and visit me in Dhaka and I will take you to North Korea!

Premiere of Avengers in Dhaka

Last week the new Avengers movie got out. In Dhaka this event was promoted by a few people walking around the city for a week in the Avengers’ costumes and at the day of the premier there was a show. Luckily, one of those actors was a friend of mine and I was invited to the closed pre-premier.

This is my very special ticket.

photo

The show started with a fashion show as it says on the ticket. It was mixed with some performance of different Avengers. This one is the Iron Man (for those who didn’t guess)

And a few pictures of the Dhaka-Avengers!

avengersBefore the movie all the invited guests had a chance to take a picture with Avengers. Captain America is my friend, btw!

IMG_5364The most interesting part of the movie was though that here they play their national anthem while the flag is waving on the screen just before the movie (everybody stands up!) . And no ads or trailers !

For KFC fans

Hello my dear KFC fans! Dhaka has something to offer to you

IMG_4998 IMG_4999 IMG_5338Friends say that BFC is great, but I am waiting for one of you to try it!

Btw, they have a real KFC as well. But with all these other FCs who cares??

CNG

Remember that green little box in front of the Khaleda’s office?IMG_5171This means of transportation is called a CNG. It is the most common way of getting around if for rickshaw it is too far and you don’t have a car.

A ride of 45-60 minutes will cost about 300 taka (and that is for foreigners!).

The lock is inside and the driver opens/closes it himself.

IMG_5330Here is a little video of one of my rides. I must say that this distance was a very quite one,  but still pretty bumpy. If it is in the traffic jam or on the crossroads it is sometimes a bit scary.

Update: CNG stands for compressed natural gas. And! Only in Dhaka they look like cells, in the rest of Bangladesh there are no doors at all!

Bashundhara city mall

This is the second mall I have visited so far and the most impressive one.

Here in the malls the most common shops are clothes/fabrics and gold/jewellery.

There are so many clothing shops and they all sell the same thing — traditional (mostly women) clothing. All the kameez , that long dress that one should wear with pants, and regular dresses are so colourful and different, but at the same time all look the same.

Check it out yourself. And yes, all the personnel in the stores — only men.

IMG_5333 IMG_5334 IMG_5335And this is a fraction of that abundance of colours, patterns, fabrics and embroideries.

Then I checked out the view from one of the side windows. And that is like all Dhaka — full of contrasts.

shopping mallWhen walking around I was invited to join the women’s club. I was so naive and though that it had some social or political idea, but no, in the end I was gives free samples..aha. And btw there are no tampons to be found here! I took a picture with girls anyways, they were super nice!

IMG_5342I also had a scoop of Baskin Robbins ice cream (hello Saratov!) that I love. Even though Movenpick was right on the other side

IMG_5347More shopping to be done and more wondering around local malls ahead!

Not Bangladesh in the centre of Dhaka

There are a few guys in Dhaka who organise “the parties to be at” in Dhaka.

The last one of those parties was last week at the pool in one of the most expensive hotels in Bangladesh – Westin. (You can actually see the hotel from our living room, but the picture is too dark.)

Most of the local girls were swimming in shorts and t-shirts. Guys were not as you can imagine.

There were a bar, a photo booth and djs — everything like a standard party. Except for when you left the building you will see rickshaws, beggars, people sleeping on the streets and lots of garbage. And yes, girls cannot walk on their own once it gets dark.

Elections in Dhaka

This week we have local elections and therefore got a day off on Tuesday, woo-hoo! People of Dhaka get to choose two mayors (one for south Dhaka and one for north) and somebody else. All foreigners were advised not to leave their houses because of possible danger.

Remember the crazy posters? Well, it got worse on the day before election. Btw, see the teapot candidate? Apparently, women participating in elections only get routine-connected symbols.

IMG_5322 IMG_5321 IMG_5320 IMG_5318

The streets were empty on Tuesday, because all the vehicles were banned from the streets except for rickshaws. Unfortunately I don’t have my own pictures, because, like I said, it was strongly recommended not to leave the house.

Our maid though showed me something interesting the day after election. Look at her finger. This is the mark one gets after voting so it would be impossible to vote multiple times.

photo

Nevertheless everybody is compaling that the election was not fair. Attendence was very low and representatives of the current political party won.

Newspapers are full of terrible stories about violence againds some reporters and even foreign observers.

FUAD concert

Last week we went to a very nice concert.

I was told that FUAD in Bangladesh is like Justin Timberlake in the States. He was the first one to start making pop music here. (Pretty sure that JT wasn’t the first one, but that was the comparison!)

IMG_5230As you can see, I had lots of fun 🙂 Music was great and apparently these are the covers to  traditional Bangladeshi songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p02P7ttmK_M

Wish they played once again, but the guy was leaving to New York. This concert was definitely a great experience!
